The Hawkes Bay region is located in the central 'Fish Hook' on the east coast of the North Island.
New Zealand’s oldest winegrowing region, the Hawkes Bay region is famed for Chardonnay, Syrah and Bordeaux blends due to its varied soil types and higher heat summation which gives it the ability to ripen these varietals. It is also home to the Gimblett Gravels, a special appellation defined by the unique gravelly soil type from a now exposed riverbed that produces incredible red wines.
This area is defined by unique, free-draining shingle soils and average temperatures up to three degrees hotter than most other areas in Hawkes Bay, resulting in full-bodied, complex and elegant red wines. Characterised by high sunshine hours and deep infertile gravel soils, the Gimblett Gravels sub-region has earned a reputation as one of the finest wine-producing regions in the world for classically styled Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah.
